History of Avanton Castle
On the foundations of an older building, Avanton Castle was erected in the 16th century by François Aubert, mayor of Poitiers. The architecture and decoration bear traces of the various families who subsequently succeeded one another on the estate. This structure seems to have been designed as a first barrier to the winds that sweep across the plain on the road linking Richelieu to Poitiers. Its imposing height and balanced shape make it one of the jewels of Renaissance history and architecture.
